Watts and lumens - what is it all about?

At the beginning, we present some basic concepts that will help us effectively navigate the great world of light bulbs. Let's start with watts and lumens. Do you know how they differ?

The watt is a unit of electrical power that tells us about the energy consumption of a light bulb.

Lumens, on the other hand, measure the brightness of the emitted light. The higher the lumen value, the brighter the bulb.

Understanding the relationship between these two parameters is crucial to making informed choices when purchasing light bulbs. What else?

The power and color of the bulbs

Wattage, expressed in watts (W), refers to the amount of electricity that bulbs consume. The higher the power, the greater the light intensity. But is more always better? In recent years, LED bulbs have become popular, which have much lower wattage compared to traditional bulbs, but provide equally intense lighting and, above all, are more ecological.

The color of light is expressed in Kelvin (K). The lower its value, the warmer the color is, and the higher it is, the cooler it is. Following this lead, we distinguish three main categories of colors: warm (2700-3000 K), neutral (3500-4000 K) and cold (above 5000 K).

Edison (E) thread - the most common thread used in traditional light bulbs. E27 has a diameter of 27 mm, and E14 thread - 14 mm.

The bulb thread (B) mainly appears in spot and floodlights. B22 has a diameter of 22 mm, while the B15 thread - 15 mm.

Small screw thread (S) - such threads have smaller diameters and are often used in smaller lighting fixtures, e.g. in desk lamps, bedside lamps or tube lamps (S14).

Types of light bulbs

There are several types of bulbs on the market - each of them has its own advantages and uses.

One of the most popular are LED bulbs, which are characterized by low energy consumption and long life. Due to their versatility, economy and ecological aspect, they are willingly used both in private and commercial interiors. One of the most commonly used is the LED bulb with a warm color, oscillating around 2700-3000 K.

In the bulb family, we also have filament bulbs. How do they work? In filament bulbs, an electric current flows through the filament, causing it to heat up to a very high temperature, making it glow and emit light. This process is known as the glow effect. To the point ... Filament bulbs are not as energy-efficient as LEDs and have relatively low energy efficiency. Therefore, they are now abandoned. However, their original appearance cannot be denied.
