Like summer, by the sea? If so, put on your sailor cap and join us on a journey through a style that is inseparably associated with sun, sand, and the sound of waves. Of course, we're talking about the timeless nautical style. Thanks to it, the holiday atmosphere prevails in your home all year round. From the text, you will learn what characterizes the nautical style and what lighting best fits arrangements designed in harmony with this trend. So, let's head to the shore...
What characterizes the maritime style?
The fashion for nautical style in Europe began in the 1920s. The longing for the atmosphere of a seaside resort at that time led to the introduction of elements associated with beach cottage vacations into home interiors. Nautical-style interiors are characterized by a light color scheme dominated by shades of blue, white, and either red or yellow. Indigo, turquoise, and navy - the entire range of blues is allowed. In addition to white, shades of beige and ecru work well. Red or yellow are best suited as contrasting details. In addition to the color palette, motifs associated with the sea and sailing, such as stripes, anchors, ropes, ships, or nets, are important elements of the decor.
How to decorate an interior in a maritime style?
Let's start with the walls. In a maritime style, opt for paint or wallpaper in white or blue-and-white stripes. Another interesting option is to combine white wainscoting with blue or navy. For a total marine look, a photo mural depicting a seaside landscape, such as a beach, waves, or a ship, will work well. If you want to go for a Hampton style, lightweight white furniture such as tables, chairs, and cabinets will be suitable. Louvered cabinet fronts will add a resort-like elegance. For a more rugged sea-inspired theme, choose wood reminiscent of "sea wood," which is driftwood. Sea wood is weathered, slightly bleached, and has beautifully pronounced grain patterns. Linen fabrics in various shades of blue or red will add coziness to the interior. Other accessories that enhance the nautical character of the space include decorations inspired by life at sea, such as oars, lifebuoys, ship wheels, anchors, lighthouses, seashells, or starfish. You can incorporate these motifs through items like cushions, artwork, or figurines.
What kind of lighting will work in a marine interior?
The icing on the cake in arranging a nautical-themed decor is lighting. Simple wooden lamps with a hemp-wrapped cord evoke a maritime style. Such a cord can be decoratively tied like ship ropes. For a more industrial look, I recommend oval "portcullis" lamps with a metal grille. These wall sconces resemble lanterns that used to illuminate ship decks. Nowadays, these fixtures are available in various shades (black, silver, gold), making it easy to match them to the interior style. The ambiance of an old ship can also be brought to life with lighting covered in imitation rust, industrial spotlights, or retro-styled fixtures. If you're looking for less obvious maritime references, opt for minimalist and functional lantern-style lamps. You can place such fixtures on a dresser or hang them above the bed. On the other hand, for a closer New Hampton style, simple tripod lamps with a light-colored lampshade or ceramic fixtures are recommended. When caring about every detail, remember to choose matching lighting accessories, including sockets. Ceramic ones look very stylish. And what about a room for a young sea lover? Spider lamps with weaves in nautical colors are a good solution for a children's room.
You don't have to rearrange your entire apartment to evoke the charm of seaside vacations. Sometimes, just a few elements are enough to transform your home into a true haven.
