The living room is the most representative space and often the place where we spend the most free time. It's no wonder that we want everyone to feel comfortable in this area right from the entrance. But how can we achieve that? Creating a homey atmosphere requires well-chosen lighting fixtures. Here are a few tips that will facilitate lighting arrangement in the living room.
What should you consider when choosing lighting for the living room?
Certainly, this is one of the first questions that arises during renovation or when furnishing a new home. Of course, it's important for the fixtures to have an appealing appearance, but above all, they must be tailored to the needs of the residents. What does this mean in practice? It's worth considering the function that the lighting is intended to serve, as well as the size of the room it will be in. Among other things, this determines where you will place the light source and what wattage and color of the bulb you will choose.
What determines the number of light sources in the living room?
Let's start with how many light sources you need to properly illuminate the entire living room. The optimal number and distribution of light sources depend on the size of the room. In a small living room, one fixture with multiple pendants (usually 3-4) or a single pendant light accompanied by wall sconces and table lamps in strategic points will be sufficient. Spotlights are a space-saving solution. For larger spaces, spider lamps can be helpful, as they can have up to 10 light sources! Other options include multiple individual pendants arranged in a cascade or a combination of 2-3 ceiling fixtures along with additional light sources. In a living room with a dining area or a kitchenette, make sure the light fixture is centrally positioned above the table or kitchen counter/island.
Light intensity and color - what works well in a living room?
Properly chosen lighting is one that is comfortable for the eyes and doesn't cause quick fatigue. Typically, in residential spaces, we use light bulbs with a power of 8-10W. This value is also suitable for the living room. Dimmable LED bulbs are a great solution as they allow you to adjust the light intensity according to your current needs. In the relaxation area, warm lights with a color temperature of around 3000K work best. However, if your living room also serves as your workspace, it's worth considering cooler lights with a color temperature above 3500K. Such lighting will make it easier to focus. If you value great flexibility, be sure to choose LED bulbs with adjustable light color.
Where to install lighting in the living room?
Before installing the lighting, consider which furniture and areas you want to highlight with light. Most often, fixtures are hung in the central point of the room. Some people choose to place a lamp above the coffee table, dining table, or near the sofa. An important element, which we have already mentioned, is supplementary lighting, such as floor lamps, wall lamps, and table lamps. Sconces and floor lamps effectively illuminate areas designated for reading or work - choose the latter when your living room is of substantial size. Also, make sure to choose table lamps that are not only functional but also highly decorative. By matching the style of the interior, you can enhance the look of a dresser, cabinet, or table. Remember to install the light sources in such a way that they are not directed towards the TV screen.
How to choose lighting that matches the style of the interior design?
Last, but not least, is the design of the fixtures, which - let's be honest - is equally important as functionality. Not everything fits every space. The same applies to lighting design. Some beautiful lamps may simply not fit the style of the living room. That's why we should focus on the overall picture and maintain consistency in the arrangement. How? In minimalist interiors, geometric fixtures will fit perfectly, both in monochromatic versions and in pastel colors. In modern or Scandinavian-styled homes, lamps with woven cords and exposed bulbs will be gracefully incorporated. On the other hand, in boho or nature-inspired decor, fixtures and accessories made of natural materials such as wood, glass, or ceramics will work well. In more classic living rooms, a pendant lamp with a lampshade or decorative chandeliers will be a good solution.
With this knowledge, choosing lighting for your living room will definitely feel easier, and your shopping will be much quicker! :)
